deep-sea miningTrending · 91 Parliament pauses deep-sea mining licences after a close vote The first commercial permits were due this autumn. The pause holds until an environmental review reports back.
Members voted 168 to 161 to halt every pending seabed mining licence until the national environmental review is published, which is expected next spring. Three companies had applied to start test extraction in the northern zone this year.
Supporters of the pause pointed to how little is known about life on the seabed and about the fisheries above it. The industry ministry says the review will set the rules any future licence has to meet, rather than end the programme.

deep-sea mining72 Mining start-up shares fall as its ocean permit slips a year Investors had priced a licence this year. Regulators want more data on the sediment plume.
The company’s shares lost almost a fifth of their value in a day after it said its first permit would not come before next autumn. It had told investors to expect a licence within months.
Regulators want another year of measurements on the cloud of sediment the collectors stir up, and on how far it drifts. The company says it has the cash to wait; analysts expect it to raise more.

deep-sea mining64 Island nations split over a seabed mining moratorium Two want to push ahead; three more want a pause.
At the regional summit, two governments said they would keep issuing exploration permits in their own waters, arguing the metals could pay for climate adaptation. Three others called for a moratorium of at least ten years.
No vote was taken. The summit agreed to commission a joint study, which leaves each country free to decide for its own seabed in the meantime.

transfer window66 Deadline day: what every club in the league still needs Twenty squads, one afternoon, a lot of loans.
With the window closing at 11 pm, most of the league is still looking for a striker or cover at full-back. Loans should make up most of the business, as clubs try to stay inside the spending rules.
Three clubs have not signed anyone yet. Two of them are in the bottom four, which is why their managers have been asking for help in public.

The agency has moved its first crewed landing back by two years, after a review of the last test flight found problems with the lander’s heat shielding and engines. The crew has already been named and stays the same.

space exploration79 Heavy rocket’s tenth flight catches the booster and loses the ship Progress, again, in both directions.
On its tenth flight the booster flew back to the launch tower and was caught for the third time. The ship on top broke up on re-entry over the ocean, minutes before its planned splashdown.
The company says it got the data it needed and wants to fly again within weeks. Regulators have to review the loss first, which could push the next launch back.
