Privacy Policy
Nouly is a news bot that runs inside Telegram. This policy explains what information Nouly uses, why, and the choices you have. We keep it short because Nouly collects little — there’s no account to create and no app to install.
What Nouly uses
- Your Telegram user ID, @username and language setting. A numeric ID so we know which chat to send your digest to, your @username so a human can recognise you if you write in for support, and your language so we know which language to write in. We do not store your real name. Telegram sends your first and last name with every message, but we neither save them nor keep them after replying.
- Your feed preferences. The country, topics and keywords you choose, so we can tailor your daily stories. Topics are the subjects you tap from a list; keywords are phrases you type yourself. You set these inside the Nouly app that opens from your chat; where the chat still offers them, they are the same settings, stored once.
- Messages you send the bot. The text you type — like a keyword you want followed, or a request to draft a post — is processed to respond to you.
- Basic usage signals. Which stories you open and any feedback you give, stored as simple events so we can improve what Nouly shows.
- Stories you like. When you tap the heart on a story — in the chat or in the Nouly app, they are the same heart — we record which story it was and when, so we can show it back to you in your liked list and understand what is worth sending. Tapping the heart again removes that record straight away, and after 30 days it drops out of your liked list and is cleared with the story itself (see How long it’s kept).
- Which stories you have read. When you open a story — in the chat or in the Nouly app — we record that you opened it, and when. It is what puts the tick beside a headline you have already read, so your place is the same wherever you pick Nouly up. It is kept only while the story itself is (see How long it’s kept), and nobody but you sees it.
- When you tend to use Nouly. We estimate roughly what time of day suits you, so your digest arrives at a sensible hour. It is worked out from your own use of the bot — we never ask for or receive your location or your device’s time zone.
- Purchase records. If you buy Nouly Premium, we keep a record of the transaction — Telegram’s payment identifier, the amount in Stars, and when it happened — so we can grant what you paid for, honour refunds, and keep our accounts. We never see or store card or payment details; Telegram handles the payment itself.
Who can see your messages
If you send feedback or open a support ticket, that message is forwarded to our internal support channel so a person can read and reply to it. Please don’t include anything sensitive you wouldn’t want a human to read.
The Nouly app inside Telegram
Nouly can open as an app inside Telegram. When it does, Telegram sends the app a signed introduction so we can be sure the request really came from you: it contains your Telegram user ID and the profile basics Telegram attaches to it — your first and last name, your @username, your language, and your profile photo link. We read only the ID and store only that; the rest is discarded, exactly as with a message you send in the chat.
That introduction, and the briefing the app shows you, travel to the server hosting the app. Setting up in the app writes the same country, topics and keywords as setting up in the chat, and liking a story there writes the same record as liking it in the chat — one account, whichever way you use it. If you have never messaged Nouly before, finishing setup in the app creates your account.
The app is served from the same servers as the rest of Nouly, in the European Union. While it is being developed or tested it may instead be served through a tunnelling provider, which passes the traffic between your phone and us and can therefore see it; if that ever becomes how we serve it to you, we will name the provider here.
What Nouly does not collect
No real name, no email address, no phone number, no precise location, no advertising profiles, and no tracking of you across other websites or apps. Nouly shows no ads and does not sell your data to anyone.
How your information is used
- Deliver your daily digest and the stories on the topics you follow.
- Translate stories and generate social posts when you ask.
- Understand what’s useful so we can improve Nouly over time.
- Remind you that your news is waiting if you stop opening it. We keep a count of these reminders and when the last one was sent, so they get rarer over time: daily for the first three days, then less and less often, and at most once a month after that. Open Nouly again and the count resets.
Why we’re allowed to use it (legal basis)
- To give you the service you asked for. Delivering your digest, storing your country and topics, and answering your questions about a story are all necessary to provide what you signed up for (performance of a contract). The same applies to handling a purchase if you buy Premium.
- To keep Nouly working and improve it. Usage events, error logs and abuse prevention rest on our legitimate interest in running a reliable service. You can object to this — see Your rights below.
- To tell you your news is waiting. The reminders we send when you stop opening Nouly rest on our legitimate interest in keeping a service you signed up for useful to you. They taper to at most monthly and stop the moment you come back. You can object to this — see Your rights below — and blocking or deleting the chat in Telegram stops them immediately.
- To meet legal obligations. Purchase records are kept because tax and accounting rules require it.
Where your data is stored
Your preferences, profile basics and usage events are stored on servers in the European Union.
Your messages travel through Telegram’s own infrastructure before they ever reach Nouly, under Telegram’s privacy policy rather than this one.
Who processes your data
To make Nouly work, some information is handled on our behalf by:
- Telegram — delivers every message between you and Nouly, under Telegram’s own privacy policy.
- Cloud hosting and database providers — where the service runs and your settings are stored.
- Third-party AI providers — they write and translate the news, and answer questions you ask about a story.
- Monitoring providers — they receive technical logs so we can tell when Nouly is broken. Message text and credentials are stripped before logs leave our servers.
These providers act on Nouly’s instructions to deliver the service. Nouly does not share your information for advertising or sell it to anyone. If you want to know exactly which companies are involved, ask us and we’ll tell you.
Data sent outside the EU
The AI providers above are based outside the European Economic Area, mainly in the United States.
Text you type may be sent outside the EEA so an AI provider can understand it and reply — for example when you ask something in your own words. Choosing options from the bot’s buttons does not send anything you wrote abroad.
The news itself — headlines and articles, with nothing about you attached — is written and translated by those providers regardless.
Where a transfer happens it takes place under the providers’ data-processing terms, which rely on the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses.
How long it’s kept
The text of messages you send the bot is deleted after 60 days, everywhere we hold it. We keep the record that something happened — which we use to understand how Nouly is used — but without the message text.
Reading streaks. We record which days you finished the day’s feed, so we can show your weekly streak, and we record the extra posts, extra fetches and extra topics that streak has unlocked this week (including which extra topic you chose). The detailed week-by-week record is deleted after 8 weeks, and your running totals (your current streak and how many weeks you’ve completed) stay on your account until you delete it. If the streak breaks we delete the extra topic from your feed. As with everything else you do in Nouly, the underlying usage events — that you finished a feed on a given day — stay in the usage record described above, which we keep so we can understand how Nouly is used.
Stories you like. Your liked list reaches back 30 days. After that the story is cleared out of Nouly and your like goes with it, so there is nothing left to list. Tap the heart again at any time and the record is removed immediately. The usage event that you liked something stays in the usage record described above, without the list.
Stories you have read. The record that you opened a story lives exactly as long as the story does — about 7 days — and is deleted with it. There is no separate reading history that outlives the news it refers to.
Gift links. If you send someone a free week of Premium, we record that you created that link and, when someone uses it, that they did. This connects your account to theirs, which is how the free week is given out and how we stop the same link being used twice. We tell you when someone opens your gift, without saying who they are. That record is part of our purchase and redemption history and is kept as long as those records are. Ask us and we’ll tell you what is recorded about you.
One exception: if you open a support ticket or send feedback, that message is copied into our internal support channel on Telegram so a person can read and reply. Those copies sit outside the system above and are not covered by the 60-day deletion. Ask us and we’ll remove them.
Your preferences and profile basics are kept while you use Nouly, so your feed stays set up between days. If you stop using Nouly and ask us to remove your data, we’ll delete it. Purchase records are kept for as long as tax and accounting rules require, even after the rest of your data is deleted.
Sometimes new sign-ups join a waiting list before we can let everyone in. If that happens to you, we keep the same profile basics — plus when you joined the queue, so we let people in in the order they arrived — while you wait, even though the bot isn’t delivering anything to you yet. Ask us and we’ll remove you and your data from the queue.
Your choices
- Change what Nouly follows any time in the Nouly app, under “Topics & country”.
- Stop Nouly by blocking or deleting the chat in Telegram — it stops sending you anything.
- Delete your data by contacting us (below); we’ll remove your stored preferences and profile basics.
Your rights
If you are in the EU or UK, data-protection law gives you the following rights
over your information. To exercise any of them, email contact@nouly.app or send
/help to the bot and open a support ticket — either reaches us.
- Access — ask what we hold about you and get a copy.
- Rectification — have anything wrong corrected.
- Erasure — have your data deleted.
- Restriction — ask us to stop using your data while a dispute is sorted out.
- Portability — receive the data you gave us in a machine-readable form.
- Objection — object to the processing we base on legitimate interests, such as usage analytics.
We answer within one month. There is no charge, and asking costs you nothing — we will never restrict your use of Nouly because you exercised a right.
You also have the right to complain to a data-protection authority. You can go to the one where you live; in Italy that is the Garante per la protezione dei dati personali. You are welcome to raise it with us first, but you are not required to.
Children
Nouly isn’t directed at children under 13 (or the minimum age in your country), and isn’t intended for them to use.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, we’ll update the date at the top of this page. Continuing to use Nouly after a change means you accept the updated policy.
Who runs Nouly
Nouly is an independent project and its operator is the data controller for the information described here. You can reach them through the support route below, and they will identify themselves on request.
Contact
Questions about your data, or want it removed? Email contact@nouly.app — a person reads it, and we answer within one month, usually much sooner.
You can also send /help to
the bot and
choose Open support ticket, which reaches the same person and replies in
the same chat. Either way, say that you want your data deleted and we’ll remove your
stored preferences and profile basics.
One thing to note if you email us: we hold no email address for you, so we cannot match a message to an account by itself. Include your Telegram @username, or write from the bot, so we know whose data to act on.
